Journal Entry # 7- Discourse Analysis (Professional Editing Strategies Used by Six Editors,” by Jocelyne Bisaillon)

Answer the following questions about the discourse analysis article, “Professional Editing Strategies Used by Six Editors,” by Jocelyne Bisaillon.

What is the writer trying to find out more about through their research (what research question guides their work)?

The writer is trying to study the pre-professional aspects of research editing conducted by authors. The writer is making an attempt to identify the approach used by revision experts and whether their approach contributes to the success of inexperienced writers who are trying to edit accordingly. In lieu, the writer investigates the revision process; detection strategies; problem-solving strategies in writing; authentic writing task; and linear process of the professionals.

What is the research methodology of this article (how do they collect their information, and how do they analyze the information they collect)?

The writer conducts a study on professional editors by filming their work while they are engaged.

How does professional editing differ from how students revise their own work?

Professional editing differs from student’s edition through the following ways:

· Professional editors perform their work based from a text by another person. That is from something already written by his/her client or another author.
· Professional editors are assigned limitations by their client. In that, the client will set mandated rules governing the extent to which the professional editor is allowed to change or revise the text.
· Social and Physical environment also differ.

Group # 5- Natalie Dylan Response {Camara And Gretel}

However you respond to this auction is directly related to how you view yourself. You know those promise rings some of you children wear? Thats out of respect for your own oppurtunity to chose when you lose your virginity, not to be dictated by anyone else.

In my opinion, she is on some level, by allowing someone else and perhaps even society, the chance to say when she loses her virginity. If the bids high enough, she will sell it. I'm not saying thats totally wrong because, women do and have married for money. Therefore as far as I'm concerned, that is a moral choice that everyone makes at some point in their lives. What I am saying is that the sanctity of marriage has been systematically desanctified by so many different events and people's personal choices that you have decided on your own, what is right for you and your body.

Journal Entry # 5- Separation Between Theory and Practice in American Universities.

One debate that arose from the text, English Studies was Dewey’s elaborated viewpoint to the fact that universities should assume the responsibility of promoting pedagogy. As he states, “To decline to recognize this intimate connection of professions in modern life with the discipline and culture that come from pursuit of truth for its own sake, is to be at least one century behind times (MCComiskey 12).” Dewey argues that to promote social democracy, the universities must bridge the gap between mind and matter, class and function and one’s destiny. His belief is that the distinction between professions should be viewed as equal importance. In that, the labor force, jobs should not be demoralized based on practice, but rather, there must be seen as an equilibrium based on common intellect. Thus, fostering professional life to flourish on an equal scale amongst students and the quality of education to drastically improve. Dewey notes that, unless this practice is adopted, universities are doomed to failure because dissolution of distinction between knowledge conquers the educational system.

Dewey cared about interdependence in the working world because he saw that devaluing education and intellect amongst the educated to be a form of social barrier and inequality.
If each student receives the same quality of education, then why should the field of practice or specialty which he chooses be more important than the other?
For Dewey, it was imperative to uphold the distinction between intellectuals and the working world, in order to maintain “old-school elitism” which was beginning to decline at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Journal Entry 3

Excerpt from “Inventing the University,” by David Bartholomae

1. What does Bartholomae mean when he says that students must “invent the university” when they write in college?

Bartholomae means that students must learn to adapt the universities' way of language, communication, speech and writing styles, as well as it's sense of knowing, selecting, evaluating, reporting, concluding, and arguing.

2. What does Bartholomae suggest is a way for students to become “insiders” within academic discourse?

By "assembling and mimicking its language," Students must find some compromise between their personal nature and the new found ideals of the institution. Whereas, a form of sync is formed that transforms their style to conventional writing, He suggests the student must take on the identity of a anthropologist or historian in order to have the mindframe of speaking "our" language.

3. Summarize some of the differences between the two examples of student writing that Bartholomae examines, and Bartholomae’s opinion of these examples.

The first argument about creativity was immature and filled with compository errors.
The second argument based her creativity from "inspiration" which followed creativity whilst the first argument, creativity defined was common and easily replicated.
Bartholomae thought that students can replicate their work from other artiste by using ther own sense of originality and stylistic maneuvers in their writing. Thus, through their own means of specialized vocabulary, they are able to produce an efficient piece of argument.

In the News #2

"Kenneth Lay is most likely responsible for devastating the retirement accounts of thousands of Enron employees. The news reports, SEC, criminal and Congressional investigation all assimilate conclusions that the Chief Executive officer of a company is responsible for what happens in that company. In past cases of financial wrongdoing by a company, the CEO has been held accountable. Kenneth Lay was the CEO of Enron at the time when the financial records were falsified and employees were not allowed to sell stocks, in which they owned, in the company. At the same time, he sold his stocks and made millions! Unless lower level officers in the company withheld information from him so he was unaware of the financial difficulties of Enron, then he is guilty of fraud!"

Change we can believe in??

The author, Jerry Holbert, clearly establishes his claim in the art above through mimicking both proposed policies of the past President, George W. Bush and President elect, Barack Obama. In the article, the words "I Plan on large Tax Cuts and increased spending" remain unchanged and the words "Now and Then" are enlargened as to signify that there is no change.

Ironically, at the bottom of the piece, he writes "Change we can believe in!" Thus, he is also critiquing the slogan of President elect, Barack Obama's campaign that change has yet to have taken place when the same old procedures used by previous President to degrade the economy and the prestige way of life are still being adopted by new presidents.

Such claim is one of value as the author analyses the current history of events with the ones of the present and makes a logical judgment. However, in my opinion, he fails because individuals belong to differing social hierachy. Therefore not all may suffer as rigidly as some. The writer appeals to the lower class and some middle class who's value consensus are often times similar.

The type of appeal used is logos. He uses logos here to appeal to the people's way of thinking. To illustrate that not every this a politician says is believable or credible and nothing changes.
